The Los Angeles Lakers faced a tough test in their first NBA Cup game. The San Antonio Spurs had the second-worst record in the Western Conference last season, but they are starting to play at a much higher level. While Victor Wembanyama is the team's best player and gets the most hype, he's not the sole reason the Spurs are turning things around.
One player who has been impressive is rookie guard Stephon Castle. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft doesn't have the best stats as he's only averaging 9.
7 points a game and 3.2 assists but he's starting to show flashes. Against the Lakers, he scored 22 points and impressed LeBron James with his performance.
Scott Wachter-Imagn Images "He's going to be special,” James said of Castle after the 120-115 win. “He's going to be special, man." That has to be a very exciting thing to hear for a rookie who has only played in 13 games.
Castle wasn't starting games early in the season but he appears to have earned a spot in the starting lineup as he's started the last six games for the Spurs. The Spurs dropped their first game in the NBA Cup but will have a chance to get back into things with a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday.
