As US President Donald Trump introduces new immigration policies, H-1B visa holders are facing uncertainties, especially the tech sector immigrants. India’s major chunk of US immigrants comprises technology sector employees. According to a post by the Washington Post, tech giants like Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple are advising employees on H-1B visas to avoid leaving the country over the apprehensions of not being able to return.

Indians lead the list of H-1B visa holders followed by Chinese and Canadian immigrants. Although President Trump has recently expressed support for H-1Bs, the administration's overall immigration policies have generated considerable concern. The news agency interviewed two H-1B workers who shared that they have cancelled their plans to come back to India, fearing that they will not be allowed to enter the United States of America again.

Another interviewee expressed concerns over the future child’s nationality, fearing a nationality dilemma where the child is neither American nor Indian. "There's an assumption that everybody who is not a US citizen might be here illegally," one H-1B worker shared through an attorney to the Washington Post. Certain employees mention that they consistently have to carry documentation in public, and businesses are funding faster processing of visa renewals to mitigate delays—expenses that "add up," as noted by one HR representative.

Another HR professional at a Silicon Valley tech firm noted that visa uncertainties impact the performance of their employees as “the threat is looming that some action will be taken against them." The U.S.

tech industry is considered to be a global hub of foreign talent. Firms like Infosys and Cognizant account for the maximum number of H-1B applications.
