A learner driver in New South Wales has been hit with a licence suspension and string of fines after doing more than double the speed limit and ploughing into an elderly woman's garage. or signup to continue reading The 19-year-old male was allegedly detected doing 107km/h in a 50km/h zone by Auburn Highway Patrol at 5:10pm on Monday evening – right in the thick of peak hour. Before police officers had a chance to pursue the speeding SUV, the L-plater crashed through a fence and into the garage of an 86-year-old woman.
Neither party was injured in the crash. The driver was arrested at the scene and subsequently returned negative results to roadside drug and alcohol tests. He was issued fines for going more than 45km/h over the speed limit, for driving unaccompanied, and for not displaying L-plates.
All up, the fines totalled $4324, while his learner's permit was also suspended for six months. Police reported significant damage to the garage and front corner of the Regents Park home, both of which bore the full force of the speeding SUV.
