With the iPhone 17 series expected to drop later this year, the buzz around potential changes is already heating up. And from the looks of recent leaks, the iPhone 17 Pro could be in for one of the biggest design shakeups we’ve seen in a while, especially when it comes to the camera. The biggest rumor making waves? A completely reimagined camera layout that spans from one edge of the phone to the other.
Think Google Pixel 9 vibes, but supersized. This eye-catching change could give the iPhone a fresh new identity, setting it apart from previous models in a big way. Backing up the buzz are some newly leaked clear cases, shared by well-known tipster Sonny Dickson.
These cases feature a noticeably wide cutout along the top rear, hinting at the expanded camera module. But one theory, floating around on X (formerly Twitter), suggests Apple might be making room for a powerful new 48MP telephoto lens. If true, this could allow for up to 10x optical zoom, an exciting leap for mobile photography. A horizontal arrangement for this lens might require reshuffling other components like the LiDAR scanner and flash, which could explain the extended layout.
Of course, nothing is confirmed just yet, and Apple being Apple, they’re keeping things tightly under wraps. There’s always the chance the redesign serves multiple purposes, better heat management, a new aesthetic direction, or simply making the Pro model stand out more. However, the leaked cases do raise a few eyebrows.
With such a large cutout, a good chunk of the upper back seems exposed, which might leave the new camera system more prone to scratches or damage. If this is the direction Apple’s going, third-party case makers will need to get creative with their protection strategies, much like they did with the iPhone 16 Pro lineup. As always, we’ll have to wait and see what Apple officially unveils.
