A prominent Port Moresby rugby league personality has come out to remind stakeholders in rival code rugby union, that they are very fortunate but are not doing justice to the way they are managing the sport for the countless young people that follow the game. The president of the Kone Tigers club in the Port Moresby Rugby Football League (POMRFL) and co-owner of the Sports Tok Sevens tournament in Benson Upas has thrown down a challenge to the rugby union fraternity to get their act together. Upas said: “You don’t know what you have.

“In fact, you (rugby union stakeholders) are very fortunate but you are just not getting it right to progress rugby in terms of management,” he said. Upas, who is also keen follower of the Brothers club in the Capital Rugby Union competition, says it is so evident in Port Moresby that the drawcard for young people is the CRU competition at the Bava Park. “When I go to the NFS Oval Two for the Port Moresby Rugby League matches to see my Tigers.

..there is no life or excitement in the young people there.

While at the Bava Park, there is always a buzz when I go there. You can virtually see the hunger in the young faces wanting to play well for their respective clubs. “So if there are developments with the current situation with the PNG Rugby Union, this area needs to be discussed at length to ensure things are done right from the start,” he said.

He said all stakeholders must take ownership as rugby union is a gold mine in PNG..
