
BAUCHI – A non-governmental organization known as Leadtots Development Initiative in partnership with Women’s Child Youth Health and Education Initiative (WCY) have organised a one day media engagement on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) with a charge on journalists to intensify awareness creation on Reproductive Health. DAILY INDEPENDENT reports that the media engagement was organised by Women, Child, Youths Health and Education Initiative (WCY) and LEADTOTS Development Initiative, in partnership with funding by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) through PLAN International Nigeria. To kick-start the program, the Executive Director of Global Affairs Canada through Plan International Nigeria, Mr Nicholas Oshojah Afeso, said that the objective of the media engagement was to keep journalists abreast with issues on sexual and reproductive health, particularly as it affects menstrual hygiene for adolescence girls.
“The media plays a critical role in shaping public perception and influencing policy decisions. Without media we cannot achieve the desired objectives. Media professionals should leverage on their news platforms in advancing the ASRH discourse,thereby fostering a well-informed society where young people can make informed health decisions,” he said.
Earlier Kamal Bello, the facilitator of the program, said that the aim of the project is to improve access to sexual and reproductive health education for adolescent girls, young women, and vulnerable groups in Bauchi He listed some LEADTOTS Development Initiative activities to include strengthening sick bays in schools, providing pad banks for formal and non-formal schools, and establishing disposable pad incubation centres in the three senatorial zones of Bauchi State. Others are strengthening learning centres for pregnant adolescents and young women, free medical services for indigent adolescents, among many others. In his goodwill message, the State NUJ Chairperson, Comrade Umar Sa’idu, appreciated LEADTOTS Development Initiative for the collaboration, assuring that Bauchi NUJ is ready to work in synergy by promoting meaningful ideas of the organisation for the benefit of the people of the state.
