Ludhiana: Ludhiana deputy commissioner Jitendra Jorwal stated on Wednesday that the procurement of paddy in the district has exceeded the halfway mark. He added that the administration has further accelerated the lifting process, achieving over 72.7% of the paddy lifted from the grain markets (mandis) in the last 72 hours.
An official statement said that the administration has set a target to procure approximately 18 lakh metric tons of paddy. “As of today, 10,07,571 metric tonnes of paddy have been purchased out of 10,55,982.5 metric tonnes that have arrived, resulting in a procurement rate of around 95.
41%,” it added. Jorwal reported that payments totalling ₹2,147 crores have been made to farmers so far. He directed officials from the food and civil supplies department, as well as procurement agencies, to further expedite the lifting of grain and assist farmers at every stage of the procurement process.
Additionally, the deputy commissioner emphasized that the district administration is “dedicated to ensuring a smooth and hassle-free procurement season, as directed by Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.” He urged all officials to continue supporting farmers during this season and stated that he is personally monitoring the purchasing, lifting, and payment processes, reviewing procurement efforts daily. Meanwhile, arhityas said that there has been increase in pace of lifting in the grain markets.
Manjot Singh, an Arhitya at Khanna grain market, who was vocal on the issue of slow procurement and lifting, said that though the pace of lifting has increased, but still it needs to be speed up further. He added that of the 18,000 bags procured by him, 15000 bags have been lifted but 3,000 bags still remain. Singh said that some paddy has not been procured due to moisture level more than permissible limit of 17%.
In the meanwhile, some farmers are also upset as their paddy crop has not been lifted. Dalvir Singh of Manupur village said that it has been seven days that his paddy stock of more than 500 bags has not been lifted on the pretext of moisture in it being 18.5%.
He added that they would have dried it but there is no space in the mandi to do the same. Dalvir lashed out at both the state and central government for making farmers suffer as he averred that it has never happened before that they had to face such scenario.
