As the temperatures dip and the days grow shorter, lawns face a range of challenges that can leave them looking lacklustre by spring. The cold, dry weather can cause grass to lose its vibrancy, become patchy, or even die back entirely without the right attention. To help homeowners keep their gardens in top condition during the colder months, lawn care expert John Harris from GreenThumb shared his top tip for winterising your outdoor space .

“ Winter brings several challenges for lawns, from frost damage to nutrient depletion,” he explained. “Left unchecked, these issues can weaken your grass, making it harder for your lawn to recover in spring. “But with a few simple adjustments, you can protect your lawn and ensure it remains resilient throughout the season.

” Now is the ideal time to boost your lawn’s health by providing it with the right nutrients for the winter months ahead. “Winter-specific fertilisers contain less nitrogen, reducing the risk of soft growth that’s vulnerable to winter conditions,” Tom said. “These fertilisers focus on building strong roots with phosphorus and enhancing cold resistance with potassium.

“Some also include trace elements like iron, which keeps your lawn looking green even in colder weather.” And as the temperature begins to fall, it's important to also modify your mowing routine. In autumn, the expert recommends leaving your grass a little longer than you would during the summer.

He explained that longer grass helps insulate the roots and offers better protection against frost..
