The Las Vegas Raiders (2-6) are currently limping through the NFL season and again appear to be one of the worst teams in the league. It's no secret what position they need the most help at, but whether or not they'll be able to get that help is dependent on how poorly they do the rest of the season. According to Tankathon , the Raiders are currently in line to secure the No.
7 pick in this upcoming NFL draft. This isn't set in stone by any means, which should provide some relief for Raiders fans, but in CBS Sports' latest mock draft, this would be disastrous. Unlike last year's draft class, which was headlined by six quarterbacks who all may have gone No.
1 had they not been in the same class, this year's class is a bit thin at quarterback. There has yet to be a clear-cut No. 1 quarterback to emerge, but there are two quarterbacks who stand out from the rest in Miami's Cam Ward and Colorado's Shedeur Sanders.
However, in the mock draft, pick No. 7 is too late to grab either one of those quarterbacks, as Josh Edwards projects that the Raiders will grab Texas offensive tackle Cam Williams. As for Ward and Sanders, he had them going No.
1 and No. 2, respectively, with Ward being taken first by the Carolina Panthers and Sanders going to the Tennessee Titans. "The Texas right tackle slides into the starting lineup," Edwards wrote of Williams.
"Las Vegas, like most other teams, need a change at quarterback, but that player stands little chance without an upgraded offensive line and collection of skill talent." Scott Wachter-Imagn Images Williams is a raw prospect who is starting for the first time this season, but he has the ideal size at 6-foot-5, 335 pounds. It seems a bit odd that he'd go before his running mate and left tackle, Kelvin Banks Jr.
, who is viewed by some as the best tackle in the draft and went one pick later, but it could be based on untapped potential. It is worth noting that Williams has struggled with penalties this season, committing 12 through eight games. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier went two picks after, but through eight games, it's unclear exactly how good of a prospect he is.
It's also worth noting that this is his first year as a full-time starter, and those kinds of quarterbacks have been dropping like flies lately in the NFL. There is still time for the Raiders' pick to improve, but if the end of the season rolls around and they aren't near the top, they'll have a decision to make. Do they trade up for Sanders or Ward or do they make a move in free agency or in the trade market? Regardless of what they decide, this franchise will not go anywhere without improved quarterback play.
