After years of speculation and rumors, Naughty Dog has finally announced its next game. Known for its grounded stories in The Last of Us and Uncharted, the Santa Monica-based game developer's next title is called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a sci-fi game. The upcoming game was revealed to the world in a surprise announcement at The Game Awards 2024 .

Unlike its recent games, Intergalactic will be a much more open-ended affair. The new retro-inspired game will have players take on the role of a bounty hunter, a far cry from the protagonists of its previous games. Intergalactic is the first new IP from Naughty Dog in over a decade.

Set 2,000 years in the future, Intergalactic features several hub-based explorable areas, breaking away from the more linear games that Naughty Dog is known for. Its premise reveals that its world is based on a new science-based religion. Like the Jax and Daxter series, players can explore its planets with a giant, stylish spaceship.

Here is the official description for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet: "The Heretic Prophet is the newest franchise in development for the PlayStation 5 console from Naughty Dog, the studio behind acclaimed series like The Last of Us and UNCHARTED. Set thousands of years in the future, Intergalactic puts players into the role of Jordan A. Mun, a dangerous bounty hunter who ends up stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet whose communication with the outside universe went dark hundreds of years ago.

Jordan will have to use all her skills and wits if she hopes to be the first person in over 600 years to leave its orbit." You can watch Intergalactic's official reveal trailer set to a catchy new tune from The Social Network's Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It's clear that Intergalactic is taking cues from Naughty Dog's older games when the studio wasn't afraid of developing games set across various genres and settings.

In the years since the release of the PS3, Naughty Dog has become quite comfortable developing games in The Last of Us and Uncharted franchises, with both of them being adapted to TV and movies respectively. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will be released on PlayStation 5..
