Lake Park man sentenced for damaging rental trailer

DETROIT LAKES — Bruce Lee Johnson, 55, of Lake Park, has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for misdemeanor theft.A felony charge of issuing a dishonored check was dismissed in a plea agreement.According to court records, on Aug.

18, 2023, Johnson was accused of renting a trailer and using a check written on a closed account. The check was returned unpaid by the bank. The check was dated July 29, 2023, for $1,000.



The check was from Bruce L. Johnson, payable to "Swanson's Rental."Detroit Lakes police confirmed with the bank that the account had been closed on June 1, 2023.

Johnson did not return the trailer to Swanson's Rental, which recovered the damaged trailer at a different location.The quote for the damage to the trailer, and rental of the trailer, was $1,316.36.

A police officer attempted to contact Johnson multiple times. However, he was not able to reach him. Johnson did not pay or contact Swanson's Rental.

On March 4, District Judge Gretchen Thilmony ordered Johnson to serve 90 days in jail, stayed one year, and ordered him to pay $1,318.84 in restitution, a $100 fine and $150 in court fees. He was placed on unsupervised probation for one year.

23, 2024, a Detroit Lakes police officer responded to a domestic incident on Minnesota Avenue. The man’s sister had called the police after the man had told her he had been assaulted. After arriving on the scene, officers learned Meyer had attacked her husband, biting him on the chest and leaving an injury with teeth marks and blood.

During the altercation, Meyer picked up a hatchet and held it up as if to strike the victim or throw it at him. But the man was able to wrestle the hatchet away from her. Officers found the hatchet, and Meyer told them she had grabbed the hatchet because the man had thrown a bottle near her.

On Feb. 25, District Judge Michael Fritz issued a stay of adjudication, with successful completion of probation to result in a dismissal.Meyer was ordered to serve 90 days in jail, with 88 of those days stayed two years, and credit for two days served, and was ordered to pay a $400 fine.

She was ordered not to drink or use unprescribed drugs, and to complete cognitive skill training and comply with cognitive behavioral interventions/programming as directed by probation.She must also complete a comprehensive assessment and follow the recommendations, including aftercare. She was placed on supervised probation for two years.
