Tosin Oyediran In a renewed effort to combat noise pollution, the Lagos State Government has mandated nightclubs, bars, lounges, and worship centres to obtain permits for events involving amplified sound. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the policy on X (formerly Twitter), reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting public health. “Own Your Environment.
Unregulated noise poses significant health and environmental risks, which the government will not tolerate,” Wahab stated. The Lagos State Government also shared this policy via its X account, which was accompanied by a flyer on Sunday afternoon. “Let’s work together to achieve a noiseless and peaceful Lagos,” said the commissioner.
“I call on religious organisations, business owners, the entertainment industry, and event planners to ensure their activities occur in soundproofed, enclosed spaces to safeguard neighbouring residents.” A Special Task Force on Noise Pollution, led by LASEPA in collaboration with state agencies, will enforce the regulations, prosecute violators, and ensure compliance. Starting January 2025, the government will roll out public awareness campaigns to educate Lagosians about noise limits and the importance of a quieter environment.
Recently, venues in Shomolu, Victoria Island, Lekki, Surulere, and Ikoyi faced sanctions for breaching noise regulations under the NESREA Act of 2007. The Act sets noise limits at 60 decibels during the day and 40 decibels at night in residential areas, with even stricter limits for entertainment venues. Lagosians are encouraged to celebrate responsibly and contribute to a healthier, quieter community this festive season.
