The Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Transportation, over the weekend launched a campaign promoting eco-friendly practices and the reduction of vehicle emissions, using a lively road show to raise awareness among residents about the benefits of clean energy. The initiative, named ‘EcoMove Lagos 2025’, is a week-long campaign aimed at promoting sustainable transport solutions and fostering greater environmental responsibility across the state. It is being spearheaded by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, with the theme: “EcoMove: Connecting Communities, Reducing Emissions, The Role of Public Transportation in Achieving Sustainable Goals.

”The road show kicked off from Oshodi and moved through Mushin, Ojuelegba, Yaba, Oyingbo, CMS and Ikoyi, before concluding at Lekki Phase One.Speaking during the event, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Toyin Aremu, said the initiative, the first of its kind, is being driven by the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and executed by the Ministry of Transportation.“This initiative is designed to foster a more eco-friendly environment.

As a government, we place a strong focus on the health and wellbeing of our people, especially Lagos residents,” Aremu said.“That is why we introduced this programme, and we are working hard to shed more light on how citizens can support the government’s efforts towards promoting an environmentally friendly Lagos,” he added.Aremu explained that the campaign would also back the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative and contribute significantly to the reduction of vehicle emissions.

“We are actively encouraging the use of CNG and electric vehicles to help achieve zero emissions across the state.“This shift will benefit Lagosians by improving public health and reducing overall living costs.“My advice to drivers and other stakeholders in the transport sector is to collaborate with the government on this effort.

We must work together to create greater public engagement around environmental protection,” he said.He also urged drivers to always pick up passengers at designated parks and to prioritise safety by adhering strictly to traffic rules and regulations.Aremu confirmed that the campaign would be an ongoing project, continuing beyond the initial week-long road show.

At Ojuelegba under-bridge, Aremu commended the traffic management officials — including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Vehicle Inspection Service and the Nigeria Police — for their dedication to making Lagos a greener and more liveable city.He further encouraged residents to make greater use of government-operated modes of transport to support eco-friendly initiatives and to help reduce traffic congestion across the city.“Government cannot achieve this alone.

We need the active support of every Lagosian, drivers, conductors, mechanics, and all other professionals, to cut vehicle emissions and strengthen environmental safety,” Aremu said. Also speaking, the Coordinator of EcoMove Lagos, Mr Suraj Adebakin, described Lagos as a cosmopolitan hub and said the initiative would contribute to positioning the city as the largest economy in Africa.“In pursuing this goal, we must remain mindful of our health and how we use our resources.

This programme is focused on achieving lower carbon emissions and helping citizens take full advantage of the federal and state government initiatives promoting CNG-powered vehicles,” Adebakin said.He noted that the initiative would create opportunities for young people by providing training in maintaining and managing the new technologies that underpin the eco-friendly transition.Adebakin explained that the campaign began with a clean-up exercise at mechanic villages, followed by medical outreach programmes in motor parks where drivers and other stakeholders received health checks and medication.

“Today, we are demonstrating the spirit of collaboration between LASTMA, the Road Safety Corps and others, building the foundation for a stronger, healthier society,” he said. The post Lagos begins eco-friendly environment campaign to promote clean energy appeared first on Nigerian NewsDirect..
