The Lafayette Parish School System announced it would close schools Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday ahead of Tropical Storm Francine. The district announced the closure Monday afternoon. It originally planned to hold a partial day of classes Tuesday.

The change comes as forecasters predict Francine will intensify to a Category 2 storm before making landfall Wednesday afternoon near the Cameron Parish and Vermilion Parish line, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles said during a briefing Monday afternoon. A state of emergency was issued Monday by Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Boulet. The storm is expected to bring coastal storm surge, damaging winds and flooding to south Louisiana.

Other schools in the area also announced closures ..
