Lafayette committed five turnovers in the contest, including three interceptions and two lost fumbles.
Three of the turnovers came in the first quarter as Jesuit held a 17-0 lead after 12 minutes. The second quarter proved to be more of the same as Gavin Palmisano, the junior running back, scored two of his five touchdowns in the quarter to really separate Jesuit away from Lafayette. A critical pick six from Blue Jays linebacker Wyatt Mire capped off a monstrous half for Jesuit as they took a 38-0 lead into the locker room.
With 5:06 left in the third quarter, Palmisano scored his fifth touchdown as the score extended to 45-0, enabling a running clock. The Lions did find the endzone in the fourth quarter on a four-yard scamper by Richmond Saunier. “It got away from us pretty quick,” Lafayette High head coach Garrett Kraemer said postgame.
“Have to give Jesuit credit, they came out and executed and played very physical. It wasn’t the outcome we wanted but I’m proud of our kids the way they finished the season.” The loss in the first round means a 5-6 record to end the 2024 season, the school’s first postseason appearance since 2021.
The Lions picked up three straight wins to open the season before a rough stretch of district games led to five straight losses to the likes of Barbe, Acadiana, Carencro, Sam Houston and Southside (all five made the playoffs). Lafayette was able to respond and win the final two games of the season to clinch the 22nd seed in this year’s bracket. The Lions will now head to the off-season as they look to build around young talent such as Saunier, RB/WR Jamieon Brown, and several other key contributors.
They will also look to replace standout Kevon’te Landry, Elijah Goodie, two offensive line starters, and six starters on the defensive side of the ball. Jesuit will advance to the second round of the Division I Select bracket as they will travel to Lafayette to play the six seed, the Teurlings Catholic Rebels..
