SWIMMING: LAE Amateur Swimming Club brought seven swimmers to participate in the recently concluded 2025 Theodist PNG National Swimming Championships staged over the weekend at the Taurma Aquatic Center in Port Moresby. LASC President Richard Howden said they are known as the Lae Seals and have about 40 swimmers both juniors and seniors. “Participating this weekend in Port Moresby we have seven Lae Seals that have come across and again a mixture of junior and seniors so we, three junior swimmers and all under-eight that have made the trip and the balance being senior.

So, for some of our swimmers this is the first time competing at a long course competition or 50m pool and it’s a little bit scary but they’ve done really well and I think the event in general has been an amazing success so far so congratulations to the Boroko Amateur Swimming Club. Lae will be hosting the short course swimming competition in September, which will be a 25m competition and will be welcoming all the Port Moresby swimmers and all the swimmers from across the country. And PNG swimmers from abroad for that event.

We’ve got a long history Lae for competing in both PNG and in POM for the events. But we certainly trying to get our swimmers in the national team. The Lae Club only had our first short course event after Covid last year and we have been rebuilding since then and our seniors and juniors are starting to do really well.

With some new coaches and new support from local businesses. Hoden said they took a hit during Covid-19 that resulted in the slow pick up, “but since we’ve been able to bring on some new coaches and some enthusiasm around the sport we have tried to make it as affordable as possible for the swimmers. “And we are going to the schools and advertising that we are back up and running and its an opportunity for kids to get back into swimming, its such a great sport for both fitness and for safety and all kids should learn to be pool safe.
