An inspection team checks on a business premises in Sungai Asap.MIRI (April 19): Seven out of 30 business premises in the Sungai Asap township area were recently issued compliance notifications over various offences under the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Chapter 76).The integrated operation conducted by the Bakun Labour Office was conducted in collaboration with the Belaga District police headquarters, Bintulu Labour Office, Social Security Organisation (Socso) Bintulu, and Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Bintulu.
Bakun Labour Office senior assistant director Edwin Eddy said the inspection was to ensure these businesses comply with the new 2025 minimum wage policy.“Many employers failed to provide complete payroll records for documenting the wages of their employees.“Some employers in Sungai Asap are still paying workers below the minimum wage, and have been advised that the compliance period for employers with less than five workers would begin on Aug 1, 2025,” he said in a press statement.
He added that through this operation, the labour office hoped to raise employers’ awareness of the need to comply with labour laws and safeguard their employees’ welfare.He thanked Socso and EPF Bintulu for supporting the operation as it related directly to workers’ welfare.On a related matter, Edwin revealed that an employer was recently issued a compound of RM9,000 by the office for the offence of late wage payment.
“Late wage payment is in violation of Section 109 of the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Chapter 76).“Regardless of the reason, employers are required to pay wages no later than the seventh day after the end of the wage period of each month,” he said.The post Labour office issues compliance notices to Sg Asap business premises appeared first on Borneo Post Online.
