Labor adds to census backflip on sexual orientation and gender

Login Labor has added to its backflip on scrapping sexual orientation and gender questions in the census, confirming multiple questions would be included to quell the LGBTQ community’s anger over its exclusion from the count. After two weeks defending the decision, Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Sunday revealed the 2026 census would include a new section on sexual orientation and gender, although the questions would be determined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics at a later date.
