Labor adds to census backflip on sexual orientation and gender

Treasurer Jim Chalmers revealed the 2026 census would now include a new section on LGBTQ and additional questions on the sexuality of Australians.

After two weeks defending the decision, Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Sunday revealed the 2026 census would include a new section on sexual orientation and gender, although the questions would be determined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics at a later date.
