Aamir Khan-backed film Laapataa Ladies, which was India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category, is out of the Oscars race. Unfortunately, the Kiran Rao directorial didn't make it to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' official shortlists for the upcoming 97th Oscars ceremony. The news has left Indians upset and has also raised questions about its selection in the first place.
Ricky Kej Calls Laapataa Ladies 'Wrong Choice' Grammy-winning music composer Ricky Key tweeted, "So, the @TheAcademy Oscars shortlist is out. #LaapataaLadies is a very well made, entertaining movie (I enjoyed it), but was absolutely the wrong choice to represent India for the best #InternationalFeatureFilm category. As expected, it lost.
" He added, "When are we going to realize.. year after year.
. we are choosing the wrong films. There are so many excellent movies made, and we should be winning the #InternationalFeatureFilm category every year! Unfortunately we live in a "Mainstream Bollywood" bubble, where we cannot look beyond films that we ourselves find entertaining.
Instead we should just look for good films made by film-makers who are uncompromising in their art.. low budget or big budget.
. star or no star..
just great artistic cinema. Below is the poster of #LaapataaLadies, I am sure most academy voting members dismissed the film just by looking at these." Hansal Mehta Questions FFI Filmmaker Hansal Mehta also reacted to the news.
He tweeted: "Film Federation of India does it again! Their strike rate and selection of films year after year is impeccable." What Internet Is Saying Netizens seem to agree with Ricky and Hansal. A user wrote, "#RRRMovie had a great chance couple of years ago.
Unfortunately it wasn't selected as India's entry due to bias against big budget action movies among the selectors. There are many other movie industries which can make better artsy movies than Indian movie makers. Indias strength is in making these loud action/masala type movies.
They have their own appeal and can be presented as Indian style movie making. I am sure some of them will be appreciated by international audience." "AWIAL will forever be a whatif," read a comment.
A person tweeted, "Iceland, whose population is equal to one of the suburbs in Mumbai, made it to the next round too!" What do you think about this? Let us know. Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from Bollywood, Entertainment News and around the world..
