Kiran Rao’s much-talked-about directorial Laapataa Ladies has been accused of copying a 2019 Arabic film called Burqa City.

Recently, a video from the Burqa City surfaced on social media, which left netizens wondering if Kiran Rao’s Bollywood movie was not an original. The viral clip revealed that the Arabic movie revolved around a newlywed man’s search for his wife after she gets mistakenly replaced by another woman wearing the burqa. Soon after the video surfaced on social media, netizens reacted to it and wondered if Kiran Rao copied the concept of the Arabic movie.

Its narrative revolves around two brides who get exchanged during a train journey. The journey filled with twists and turns begins as their husbands start searching for the real bride. Made under the banners of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, the film marked the directorial comeback of Kiran Rao after Dhobi Ghat.

Before its theatrical release, the film was screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023. It received a standing ovation from the audience present at the festival. Several celebrities, including Alia Bhatt, Priyanka Chopra, Vijay Varma and others, had also praised the movie.
