A woman who tried to attack a man she believed was a rapist in a Gold Coast home has avoided jail. Kristy Lee Edwards, 44, was initially charged with attempting to murder a man, who she believed had raped a person known to her , at a Varsity Lakes home in 2021. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today However the charge was thrown out and she instead pleaded guilty to the lesser offences of attempted burglary, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and threatening violence at night. Edwards, a nurse, was drinking heavily on the day she decided to go to the home about 11pm on March 7, her sentencing in the Queensland District Court heard in Brisbane on Tuesday. She appeared to case the house before going to her car to get a knife, CCTV played to the court shows.



She attempted to repeatedly stab her 29-year-old victim through the home’s screen door. The man was able to avoid any wounding injuries from Edwards’ attack. Police arrived minutes later and arrested her.

The court heard police had investigated the rape allegations against the man but did not have enough evidence to charge him. Judge John Allen conceded Edwards’ offending was out of character and noted she had no criminal history. He took into account the three months she had served in pre-sentence custody, before handing her a 12-month suspended jail sentence.
