“I am a defender, all day, all day, we defend!” That is the self-motto that is igniting a fire in the belly of PNG Mosquitoes debutant backline, Ryan Kororo to his fellow teammates ahead of the inaugural Pacific Cup tournament. “All day, all day..
.whatever mistakes you do, don’t look down on yourself but keep on encouraging yourself that I well get the job done in the next challenge in front of you,” said Kororo. From Popondetta and Milne Bay parentage, 26-year-old Kororo, who is second born in a family of five siblings, first started playing AFL back in 2014 while attending Waigani Primary School in Port Moresby.
He then went on to play in the Port Moresby AFL and did not give up but continued putting his body on the line in every contest. Finding his feet in the backline has given him more confidence to always challenge himself. “I then went on to play for Central Bombers (now Gereka Bombers) in 2015, 2016, 2017, then in 2018, I joined Koboni and also played my first grand final,” he said.
Looking up to former PNG Mosquitoes backline players like David Topeni, Michael Macah and Greg Ekari, Kororo said they always give me encouragement on how to defend in the backline. Being one of the debutants in the team, the feeling of representing his family, community and the country is overwhelming. “I am happy.
..because within my family, I am now the first one to represent the country in a sport.
” “I can’t express how this feeling means but I look forward to put on my best performance,” said Kororo. “Advice from my family is to always give my best both on and off the field.”.
