Indian fast casual cuisine is coming to the World Golf Village. According to an April 14 St. Johns County permit, general contractor John Shockey will build out Kolapasi Indian Canteen franchise in an 1,100-square-foot space at the Shoppes at Tocoi Creek, directly across from World Golf Village .

Kolapasi Indian Canteen is a fast-casual restaurant that offers a modern take on South Indian cuisine. The restaurant was founded in 2013 by Santhosh Muruganantham while studying bioinformatics at Georgia Tech. Unsatisfied by the nearby offerings and inspired by his mother's cooking in Chennai (on the Bay of Bengal), Muruganantham decided to found a place where he could satisfy his craving for a home cooked meal while sharing South Indian flavors with a wider audience.

Kolapasi is the word for “very hungry” in South India’s Tamil dialect. Dishes range from spicy to sweet to savory. These include Mutton Chukka is a Chettinad cuisine made from fresh goat meat and “magical sauces” and Nilagiri chicken — creamy chicken korma (curry) made with coconut, mint and coriander leaves infused with a sweet herbaceousness.

Dishes are served with biryani — fluffy, aromatic rice — and roti — thin, unleavened flatbread made from whole wheat. The Kolapasi Indian Canteen website lists two open stores in Greenville, South Carolina; and in Charlotte, North Carolina; with three locations, including Jacksonville, launching soon.
