South Central Ambulance Service's paramedic team leader, Roan Waddelow, alongside paramedic and clinical team educator Suzy Patience, delivered the session at Banbury College on Thursday, March 20. The pair, both former Banbury College students, gave a presentation and practical first aid training session, showing how to apply a tourniquet, stem catastrophic bleeding, and perform CPR. These skills can help a victim of knife crime survive until emergency services arrive.
The session was organised following a knife crime awareness campaign run by the ambulance service in February. Off the back of the campaign, Chloe Warner, a health and social care teacher at Banbury College, asked the service if it could run an event for students, providing information, advice, and training should they, or someone they are with, ever be the victim of knife crime. Ms Warner said: "The visit went really well from our perspective.
The students loved the sessions and I was delighted that they all got really involved and hands on. "Some of the students have created pieces of work after the session explaining what they had learnt and Roan and Suzy have even inspired some people to become paramedics or go to work in a clinical setting.".
