The King is to return to work this week with a slightly adjusted schedule after he was admitted to hospital for the side effects of cancer treatment . He will have two public engagements on Thursday, with meetings, audiences and an investiture within the palaces. A small number of the King’s appointments have been rescheduled as staff work to maintain a “balance” for him ahead of a trip to Italy next week.

He is said to have spent a “restful” weekend at Highgrove before travelling to Windsor Castle on Monday to begin his working week. The King will hold investitures at Windsor on Tuesday, as well as his weekly audience with the Prime Minister and other meetings at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday. On Thursday, he will have two public engagements in London and Windsor and will receive three ambassadors for the presentation of their credentials, a regular job for the monarch.



It is understood that “one or two” other engagements have been postponed. ‘Most minor bump in road’ Next week, the King and Queen are planning to travel to Rome and Ravenna for the state visit to Italy. On Thursday night, Buckingham Palace announced that the King had “required a short period of observation” at hospital and had cancelled planned engagements in Birmingham on the following day as a “precautionary measure”. A source described it as a “most minor bump in a road that is very much heading in the right direction ”. The King visited the London Clinic on Thursday morning and travelled to and from the hospital by car.

He was not joined by the Queen during his brief stay. Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, the King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital. His Majesty’s afternoon engagements were therefore postponed.

” The Palace added: “His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result”. On Friday, he was seen being driven out of Clarence House, waving from the open window of his car. He spent the weekend at Highgrove.
