In a new Channel 5 documentary, Charles & Camilla: 20 Years Married - A Royal Love Story, royal experts shared their thoughts on Charles and Camilla's relationship prior to her marriage to Andrew Parker Bowles. In the documentary, the narrator explained that in the 1970s, a young Charles had been serving in the Royal Navy , 4,000 miles away from Camilla , but would soon read a letter that turned his world "upside down".

In 1973, it was announced in the Times that Camilla and her ex-boyfriend, Andrew, were engaged. According to insiders, Charles soon discovered the betrothal and took "urgent action", sending several letters. " Katie Nicholl, royal correspondent for Vanity Fair, said: "He wrote to Camilla and pleaded with her to reconsider, but I think by this point, it was just too late." Sharing her thoughts on Charles' fondness for Camilla, Penny added: "She was, I think, his first real love, and when you fall first, sometimes you fall hardest." Charles and Camilla first struck up a romance in the 1970s when they met at a polo match.

Subsequently, Camilla and Andrew married in 1973, and Charles later married Lady Diana Spencer.

Yet, Camilla's relationship wouldn't last, as the couple divorced in 1995. Meanwhile, Charles and Diana finalised their divorce in 1996, and just a year later, in 1997, Diana tragically died. Charles and Camilla finally married in 2005 in Windsor.

The couple secured a royal blessing, and the Queen held a reception for the newlyweds in Windsor Castle. "For a long time, people like me would have told you there was absolutely no way Charles could marry Camilla, that it was absolutely out of the question and wasn’t going to happen," royal historian Hugo Vickers previously told OK! "But it did happen – and it worked." Charles & Camilla: 20 Years Married - A Royal Love Story produced by ITN Productions for 5 Saturday 5th April, 9.
