The U.K.'s King Charles had an embarrassing moment in the Australian parliament on Monday during a ceremony with the politicians in the room.

Lidia Thorpe, an Aboriginal woman and a stern opponent of the Royal family, heckled the monarch as a sign of protest. Accusing Charles of committing genocide against the aboriginals in Australia , Thorpe demanded her "land back." She was eventually escorted out by security and the ceremony resumed. All the while King Charles sat calmly next to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. A lawmaker previously known for protesting the colonization of Australia shouted "give us our land back" as King Charles finished addressing Parliament.

Ironically, he started his speech thanking the aboriginals for giving him a traditional welcome. Thorpe is an independent senator who has been a strong voice against colonisation. Speaking to DW after she was escorted out, she said, "I got a few nods from Aboriginal people in the room to show that they support my resistance, which is the resistance of my people for over 200 years.

" Thorpe said she will continue to voice her opposition until a peace-making treaty is signed to "celebrate this country together." Notably, Australia is one of the countries other than New Zealand, Canada and some Caribbean nations that have the King as head of state as it was once a British colony.
