Basomboli is yet to set the scene alight at Chiefs since arriving from Zambian club Nchanga Rangers at the beginning of last year. The 19 goals that the Congolese scored in his last full season at Rangers were the reason why Chiefs’ interest turned into a signing. By the time he left Rangers halfway through their return to the Zambian Super League, Basomboli had added seven.

The Soweto giants needed goals and felt they had found a man to provide them with the cutting edge. Fast-forward 20 months later, the 24-year-old has given the side plenty effort, desire and pace but little in terms of goals under Arthur Zwane, Molefi Ntseki and Cavin Johnson, while he has played once under Nasreddine Nabi. Last season, it was four goals (plus three assists) in 34 games, while he scored thrice (plus one assist) in 16 appearances during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign.

If it has been time on the field that he has needed, then he has had plenty having had over 3000 minutes. As it stands, it shows that he provides his goal contribution (goal/assist) every five games that he plays, which is nowhere near what he was contributing at Rangers. After all the talk and possibilities of departure during the off-season, Basomboli has stayed on and was tasked with the right flank of attack in the win over Marumo Gallants.

He had the usual effort and commitment, yet was thin on acumen and lasted an hour, before being replaced by Mfundo Vilakazi, who went on to score the winner. What is without a doubt that Basomboli will need to do better this season to earn his place in remaining at Chiefs regardless of the fact that he will still have another year on his contract. The Congolese has so far been registered along Fiacre Ntwari (Rwanda), Edson Castillo (Venezuela) and Inacio Miguel (Angola) as four of the five players for the club’s foreign quota.
