Kickoff | Mngqithi: Esperance couldn't get hold of Appollis

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi says he would love to bring a top player like Oswin Appollis to Chloorkop as they chase an eighth consecutive league title.

Appollis' future at Polokwane City remains uncertain, with both Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns reported to be chasing the services of the Bafana Bafana winger. On Wednesday, this website reported that the Tshwane giants, in particular, have upped the ante for the player's signature and are looking to flex their financial muscle to pip them at the post. The former Pretoria Callies man was on the wanted list of Tunisian top side Esperance de Tunis, but as it turns out, their offer was turned down by the Rise and Shine management.

Amakhosi Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has already come out to confirm their interest in bringing the 23-year-old to Naturena this season. With just a day left before the transfer window slams shut on Friday, it remains to be seen if they will manage to pay Polokwane City's asking price, which is believed to be more than R10 million.

Mngqithi has conceded that Appollis could be out of reach for The Brazilians. “I would love to get any top player. Appollis is one player I like, but as many coaches would always say the same thing, you don't always get what you want because we have around 40 players.

But it will be important to get a player like that if an opportunity like that avails itself. ”However, I don’t think it will avail itself because I know Esperance was interested and couldn't get hold of him, so I wouldn’t like to talk much about something at this stage, it's immaterial for me,” said Mngqithi. The player was missing from his side's 2-1 win over AmaZulu FC last weekend, raising further speculation about his future.
