A few nations on the continent find themselves in a bit of a coaching conundrum, with teams like Botswana, Tunisia, and Kenya without a permanent manager. This is also the case for Senegal, as they are currently led by caretaker coach Pape Thiaw. Thiaw took on the role after previous boss Aliou Cissé was relieved of his duties in October 2024 following a request from the country's sports minister not to renew the latter's contract.

In November, Thiaw led Senegal to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Thiaw's immediate success with the Lions of Teranga threw a spanner in the works, as it was initially reported that Senegal would seek a foreign coach to permanently replace Cissé. Thiaw, who was born in the Senegalese capital Dakar, is now reported to be the 2021 AFCON champions' next permanent manager.

According to WiwSport, Thiaw will sign an 18-month contract as the head of the Senegal national team. The report claims that the 43-year-old will pocket less than 10 million FCFA (R293,000), which will be lower than his predecessor Cissé's previous wages. Furthermore, it said that Thiaw has already been informed about his promotion, although he is yet to formally put pen to paper on a full-time contract.

Senegal are reportedly focusing on the upcoming 2025 AFCON draw, which is set to take place on Monday, 27 January. After that, Thiaw will reportedly meet with his superiors to make things official..
