In an industry where public scrutiny can make or break spirits, Khushi Mukherjee has stood her ground with fierce determination. From facing harsh criticism to carving a niche for herself, she has navigated the stormy seas of showbiz with resilience and self-belief. Khushi has not only worked in the South industry but also participated in popular reality shows like Splitsvilla X, Love School Season 3, among others.
She is now gearing up for her next film with Arbaaz Khan, Mutra Visarjan Varjit Hai. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, she talks about her journey, the reason behind taking a break, and much more! Unfiltered Khushi Mukherjee! "People have been trolling me, saying I’m not working and that’s why I’m only posting dance videos. But now, I’m getting good projects where I can actually showcase what I’ve learned during this break.
So yeah, I’m very excited about that," Khushi told Zoom. She recently wrapped shooting a song for a Bhojpuri film, saying, "For the first time in history, Ravi Kishan, Pawan Singh, Khesari Lal, Nirahua — all of them are together in the film." Without mentioning the name, Khushi continued, "The story is somewhat like Gadar, like how Gadar had a sequel.
So this is also going to be a sequel. The song is in Hindi, and I wouldn't call it an item number, I’d call it a special song. It was quite interesting — we rehearsed and shot the same day.
We had a very short time for rehearsals, but I managed to do it, and I feel great about that." Reflecting on her decision to step away from the limelight for a while, she remains unapologetic: "I never regret any decision I’ve ever made in my life because I don’t believe in decisions being right or wrong. I believe in taking quick decisions and just moving forward without overthinking.
" She added, "People thought my career was over, that I should get married or just sit at home. But I always had confidence in myself. I knew I would do something better.
" Social media trolls and societal expectations never managed to dim her shine. "Back then, people laughed at me when I said I wanted to be an actress. People body-shamed me.
They were ashamed of me when I got skinny, ashamed when I did ads — they kept talking. But I reached a point where I thought, if people are talking about me, I’m happy. Love me or hate me, you can’t ignore me.
" "As long as I’m getting comments and engagement on my social media, I know it’s alive." Regarding societal pressure to marry, she candidly says, "If I wasn't doing well in my career and got married, even if it was to a successful man, he would always look down on me. I would lose confidence because there wouldn't be equality between us.
So for me, marriage is not a retirement plan. I won’t get married until I achieve what I want." For Khushi, love is as dreamy as the films she grew up watching.
"For me, love is like what you see in Shah Rukh Khan movies or Romeo and Juliet — or in Karan Johar films! But honestly, that kind of love only happens in books and movies nowadays." She firmly believes in the power of self-love. "In real life, love means loving yourself.
If you love yourself, people will love you too. If you can’t take care of yourself, no one else will. So I believe in self-love.
" As an actress, dealing with constant judgment about appearance is part of the job, but she has turned it into a strength. "I don’t think this will ever change. I’ve always believed that first they’ll talk about you, then they’ll hate you, then they’ll ignore you, and finally, they’ll try to copy you.
If you want to stand out, you have to go through pressure and criticism. Only then will you make history. If you try to fit in, you’ll just be one of the crowd.
So I always say: be yourself and have confidence in yourself." Recalling her early days, she admits she never had a fixed destination. "For me, it was never specifically about becoming an actress.
I just wanted to become famous." Inspired by Shah Rukh Khan’s rise to fame, she started young and faced her fair share of setbacks. "I read about a modelling agency in a newspaper and applied.
Luckily, I got a photoshoot for Nokia back then. But after that, for two to three years, I didn’t get any work. That was during my 10th and 11th standard.
In 12th, I got my first movie offer after doing my portfolio. I even dropped out of college because I believe in giving 100% to whatever I do." But life had its twists.
Khushi continued, "Unfortunately, I met with an accident, and they replaced me in the film. So, I lost both my studies and my first film." Despite early failures, she persisted.
"I was only 16, I didn’t have the ‘perfect’ body type, and I hadn’t done surgeries like many star kids do nowadays. My first two or three movies were disasters. But I didn’t give up.
I kept trying, and did two more films that worked well in the industry. I even worked with Puri Jagannath." Still, she kept looking for new horizons.
"But then again, I got bored with the pattern of movies — doing two or three films a year and sitting at home in between. That’s when I wanted to try daily soaps. People thought my career was going down, but I was just following my heart.
" Summing up her philosophy, she says with a smile, "My life isn’t something I plan. It’s more like life plans things for me!" Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from Web Series, Entertainment News and around the world..
