Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has partnered with Jordan to expand international cooperation in uranium resource development. On April 8 (local time), KHNP announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), Jordan’s largest applied science research institution, in Amman, Jordan. The agreement aims to jointly investigate the concentration and distribution of radioactive isotopes, including uranium, found in Jordan's seawater and groundwater.

This collaboration is intended to establish scientific data necessary for drinking water quality management and uranium resource development. It is estimated that approximately 62,000 tons of uranium are buried in Jordan, and should high-concentration uranium resources be confirmed, there could be opportunities to apply KHNP's uranium extraction technology currently under development. KHNP is actively advancing the technology needed for the efficient extraction of uranium dissolved in water resources, such as seawater.

Consequently, the company is also steadily expanding international collaboration for the discovery of high-concentration uranium resources abroad. Recently, it strengthened its cooperation network through an agreement with Kazakhstan, the world's largest uranium producer. Shin Ho-cheol, Director of KHNP's Central Research Institute, stated, “This collaboration with the RSS not only facilitates joint investigations of water resources in Jordan, but also opens the possibility for future national-level technological cooperation.

We hope that our joint research with Jordan, which has high potential for uranium resource development, will lead to significant achievements in securing high-concentration resources.” Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, who heads the Royal Scientific Society of Jordan, also emphasized the significance of this agreement. She expressed her pleasure in conducting uranium investigations with KHNP and looked forward to broadening the scope of future technological cooperation.
