1 2 3 Pune: A meeting regarding the environment clearance for the state govt's 28-km-long water tunnel project from Khadakwasla to Phursungi will be held in New Delhi in the next few days. Sources from the irrigation department said that the meeting is crucial for receiving the go-ahead for the execution of the tunnel project, which aims to save an estimated 2.17 TMC of water losses annually.

The water expected to be saved is more than Khadakwasla Dam's total storage capacity. The water saved from the construction of the tunnel will be utilised for city and rural areas. Officials from the irrigation department said they submitted all the documents required for environment clearance.

"We are expecting a detailed discussion and are hoping for a positive outcome from the meeting," officials said. As per the plan, the tunnel will begin from Khadakwasla Dam, travel underground to Phursungi, and from Phursungi, it will connect to the canal. The water will flow as per gravity, hence, there will no need for motor pumps.

The state govt has already prepared a plan to start the groundwork for the tunnel. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2,190 crore. The govt has appointed an agency to take up the groundwork.

An official said, "The water tunnel will replace the existing irrigation canal that flows across the city and carry water to the rural areas. This canal has become old and hence leads to significant water losses. The department has worked on the tunnel proposal for the last few years.

" Meanwhile, the state govt and Pune Municipal Corporation are exploring various options to utilise the land of the existing canal. PMC has conducted drone surveys of the land along the existing canal. The land is expected to be utilised for public purposes, including development of road links, parks, and open spaces.
