The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club somehow managed to get its regular weekly outing in last week. Apparently the storm damage or crisp mornings didn’t deter this group from hitting the little white ball around. The game was “Woulda-Coulda-Shoulda,” which allowed the players to have three Mulligans for those not-so-perfect shots.

Shelley Carney shot 85 for low gross on the day. Nancy Vieira shot 3-under her handicap for a 69 and low net. Game: Vieira, 69; 2, Cathy Edgar, 73; 3, Gina Davis, 74.

Closest to pin on No. 14: 1, Vieira; 2 Karen Escott; 3, Carney. Kevin Sweeney recorded his fifth career hole-in-one recently, but he elected to seek out a warmer climate to achieve it.

Sweeney was playing at the Stardust GC in Sun City West, Arizona, along with Vince Montalto, when he hit a perfect, 131-yard, 9-iron tee shot on the 2nd hole into the cup, making the remainder of the round very enjoyable as well as the refreshments afterwards. Livy Woodward took first in a U.S.

Kids tournament in Sacramento with a 3-under pars core of 33 in the girls’ 9-10 age bracket. Alex Baca also took first place in the boys’ age 10 bracket, winning a playoff after tying with a score of 39. THETURKEYS CAN RELAX FOR ANOTHER YEAR The majority of the men’s and women’s golf clubs in the area very appropriately held turkey shootout tournaments the past week or so.

For some reason there seems to be an abundance of wild turkeys this year on the local golf courses ...

lucky for them they are off limits. The Tuscan Ridge Men’s Golf Club held their annual Turkey Shoot tournament, wherein all players who shot at or below their handicap won a turkey. Those taking a store-bought turkey home for Thanksgiving were Brian Worley, Jim Rose and Ernie Talavera.

The highlight of the day was Talavera making his ninth career ace. Knowing the high caliber of Talavera’s golf game. I would have guessed he had more than nine aces to his credit.

His hole-in-one was on the 137-yard, 11th hole, most probably with an 8-iron or 7-iron. The Tuscan Ridge Women’s Golf Club gave the turkeys a break last week and held a medal play tournament instead. Sandy Allen (97) was low gross in the first flight.

Betty LeRoy shot a net score of 76 to win the net division. Pam Gonzales won low gross in the second flight. Linda Mowell followed suit in the net bracket.

The Bidwell Park Women’s Golf Club held their annual turkey shootout tournament but, to the relief of the multitude of turkeys strutting around the golf course, they pay out to the winners in grocery gift cards. First flight low gross: Sally Pearson (88). Low net: 1, Glenda Kubo (73); 2, Sandy Anderson (76).

Second flight low gross was a tie between May Gallaway and Yumiko Hankins (100). Low net: 1, tie, Molly Barnum and Joan Patton (74); 3, Barbara Lutz (75). Third flight low gross: Carrol Grimes (106).

Low net: 1, Mari Mozzini (77); 2, tie, Sue Blizman and Wendy Donahoo (78). The Butte Creek Men’s Golf Club barely beat the rain last Saturday to play their already once postponed annual turkey shoot tournament. The weather man wasn’t totally obliging, but at least it didn’t rain until the last group was in the clubhouse.

Ben Pollock was the overall low gross winner with a one-under par score of 71. Pollock also tied Brian McGovern for low net at 71. Other players making the net pay-out and adding a few points to their player-of-the-year standings were: 3, Jim Wilson (72); 4, tie, Brian Jones and Kevin Parrish (73); 6, tie, Eric Blofsky and yours truly (74).

It appears that the Butte Creek men’s club 2014 player-of-the-year champion will be between Brian McGovern, currently in first place with a 124-point lead over the defending champion, Bob Leckinger. Eric Blofsky is in third place, 150-points behind Leckinger and not to be counted out just yet. The point totals drop off fast after Blofsky.

However, because top finishers get double points for the end-of-the-year tournament (360-points for first), and depending on how McGovern and Leckinger fare, Blofsky could conceivably move into first place. Points are earned in ten selected tournaments throughout the year. Both McGovern and Leckinger are the only members who participated in all ten tournaments.

Blofsky played in eight events. The top twenty players will compete this weekend to determine the winner. Holding true to form, the Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club also held their annual Turkey Trot tournament last week.

The four-member teams played one best-ball on the par 5’s, two best-balls on the par 4’s and three best-balls on the par 3’s. Ginny Wolf was low gross over the field. Joan Wagoner was overall low net.

The players on the team winning via a card-off, in the game portion were Nancy Evans, Wolf, Linda Arellano and a blind draw. Nancy Dooly, Sally Pearson, Jakki Thomas and a blind draw were the unlucky recipients in the card-off and settled for second place. Closest to the pin winners on hole No.

11 were: 1, Arellano; 2, Thomas. Craig Fellner was low net in the first flight of the recent Chico SIR’s golf tournament held at Bidwell Park with a score of 66. Gary Pederson (67) and Darrell Spooner (68) took the second and third spots.

Les Perkins was the only player to shoot below 70 in the second flight with a net score of 69. Don (the hole-in-one man) Cummings, Don Freeman and Max Hahne tied for second place with a net 70. Jim Barger and Darrell Hands tied for fifth place at 71.

Gene Parker had the low net score on the day of 64 to easily win the third flight. Dennis Wilson (69), Rich Pascoe (71) and Don Lampe (73) were the other top winners in the third flight. The fourth flight winners were: 1, tie, Arno Drews and Karl Kumli (72); 3, Chuck Price (74).

Closest to the pin winners on hole No. 2: 1, Ray Spangler; 2, Bill Stewart: 3, Hahne; 4, Alan Stephenson; 5, Fellner. Hole No.

7: 1, Jim Barger; 2, Gene Parker; 3, Dave Cato; 4, Cummings; 4, Ray Navarro. Ernie Talavera aced the 11th hole at Tuscan Ridge for his 9th career hole-in-one as noted above under the Tuscan Ridge men’s club tournament report. Linda Boone added another hole-in-one to her credit during the Canyon Oaks Women’s weekly tournament.

Boone aced the 83-yard, 3rd hole, but unfortunately the closest-to-the-pin hole was No. 11. Back in May of this year (2014), Boone aced the 11th hole and fortunately it was the closest-to- the-pin hole that day.

Two holes-in-one in one year, not bad. Now, she needs to finish the cycle and ace the 6th and 14th holes. Quote by Johnny Miller on the yips: “Basically, it’s the inability to make your hands obey the commands your mind gives them.

” Quote by Sir Walter Simpson (from the Art of Golf): “Excessive golfing dwarfs the intellect. And this is to be wondered at, when we consider that the more fatuously vacant the mind is, the better for play. It has been observed that absolute idiots play the steadiest.

” Kirk Scotland, Session of Perth, 1590: “John Gardiner, James Bowman, Laurence Chalmers and Laurence Cuthbert confess that they were playing golf ...

in time of preaching after noon on the Sabbath. The Session rebuked them, and admonished them to resort to the hearing of the Word diligently on the Sabbath in time coming, which they promised to do.” (Session: A court of criminal jurisdiction).

A Scottish Royal Parliamentary Proclamation in 1457 from James II, III and IV banned “Golfe”, among other sports, as a dodge from the more important task of improving one’s archery skills. Royal condemnation would hardly have been merited were the game not such a diverting distraction. The same can be said today for mowing the yard, raking the leaves or going to the movies with your spouse.
