The Phoenix Suns were 8-1 on the season heading into Saturday night's showdown with coach Mike Brown's Sacramento Kings, a development made possible by Kevin Durant's exceptional start to the season. Durant lead the Suns in scoring at 27.6 points per game heading into the contest, which he was expected to miss due to a calf injury.
On Saturday, Durant's injury got a discouraging update from longtime basketball scribe Shams Charania that does not bode well for his immediate future with coach Mike Budenholzer's team. "Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant – off to an MVP-caliber start to the NBA season – suffered a left calf strain on Friday night and will miss (and) be re-evaluated in two weeks, sources tell ESPN," Charania wrote on his X account. The former Texas Longhorns star notched 37 points in 26 minutes of game action. Durant and Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets are the only NBA players shooting 55% or better from the floor this season and shooting 40% or better from three-point range while averaging 25 points or more per game.
The Suns are 7-0 in games decided by five points or less with five minutes remaining this season. Durant has scored a league-leading 35 points during clutch late game scenarios, adding to his legend as one of the most clutch players in the NBA.
