KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Wildlife Department has deployed a team of rangers to investigate claims of alleged elephant rampages and crop destruction in a village in Gua Musang.Its director, Mohamad Hafid Rohani, said the investigation was launched following a report lodged with the Gua Musang branch of the Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa)."I was informed by a Jakoa officer in Gua Musang that the department received the report this morning.
"Following the report, we have deployed a team of rangers to investigate the incident," he said.It was reported that around 600 Orang Asli residents in Kampung Tendrik near Pos Bihai have been living in fear for the past two weeks after a herd of elephants entered their village.The Orang Asli claimed that the elephants destroyed crops and sheds on their farms.
They also alleged that the number of elephants is increasing, posing a threat to their safety.Kampung Tendrik Orang Asli Development and Security Committee chairman Apek Asud said the community is worried for their wellbeing, as many of their crops have been destroyed."Almost every day, the elephants enter our farms and destroy our crops, which are our main source of food.
"We are worried that if this continues, we will no longer have supplies such as bananas and cassava to feed our families," he said. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
