KOTA BARU: The Kelantan government is taking seriously the revelation by the state police chief that underage girls as young as 10 are involved in sexual activities.Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said the state government would obtain further details from the police regarding the matter."This is a serious moral and social issue, primarily affecting the younger generation who lack religious education and proper family supervision.
"The state government will step up efforts to address the problem through a special committee that was established several years ago."A main committee to tackle social issues, involving both state and federal agencies, has also been formed to coordinate a comprehensive response," he said.Fadzli added that the state government has also launched Komuniti Rabbani (K-Rabb), an integrated programme aimed at educating and reforming society.
"For me, the role of families and parents is extremely important to prevent such immoral activities from happening to our children," he added.Police today said Kelantan has seen a sharp increase in the number of sexual offences, particularly involving underage girls, some as young as 10.Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the data was based on cases recorded since last year.
He added the state police are deeply concerned over the rising number of sexual cases in Kelantan.In the first three months of this year, police recorded 65 sexual offences, mostly rape and incest. This is a more than 17 per cent increase compared with 45 cases recorded during the same period last year.
Yusoff said what was even more alarming was that some rape cases involved girls aged as young as 10 and 11, with male suspects aged between 11 and 15.© New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
