NEW DELHI: About 58% of the establishments were headed by female proprietors in the manufacturing sector in 2023-24, an increase of 4 percentage points from the previous year, results of a survey showed on Wednesday. The detailed results of the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE) 2023-24 also showed that overall, 28.1% of total workers, during the year were females.
This includes the significant presence of female workers among the OAEs (won account enterprises), where they constitute more than one-third (33.7%) of the total workforce of OAEs. Share of establishments headed by female proprietors has increased to 26.
2% in 2023-24 from 22.9% in 2022-23 and for other services from 9.7% to 14.

In manufacturing, participation of female workers was the highest (46.5%), followed by other services (22.5%) and trade (19.

4%) and Maharashtra (9.7%) in ASUSE 2023-24. West Bengal and Maharashtra have employed the most female workers in rural and urban sectors, respectively, with corresponding share of around 16% and 13%.
Unincorporated non far establishments are those which are not incorporated, which means they are neither registered under the Companies Act 1956 nor under the 2013 Act. The data showed that every one out of four proprietary establishments, at the all India level, was owned by a woman. About one-third of the proprietary establishments in Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana and West Bengal are headed by females.
Earlier a fact sheet of the ASUSE survey for 2023-24, which maps various economic and operational parameters of the non-farm unincorporated sector across manufacturing, trade and services sectors, had estimated that the number of establishments grew by 12.8% between Oct 2023-Sept 2024 compared to the previous year, while the total employment rose 10.1% during the same period.
