The essential product has many usages, with the majority of Brits reaching for the bottle to help them start their day. However, grabbing the milk to pour into your morning cup of coffee or tea, only to find it's curdled and foul smelling is not the best start to your morning. This happens often because milk and other dairy products turn sour easily, leading to a lot of food wastages and disappointed people.

Experts have now shared a creative hack that will help householders prevent their milk from curdling or going sour. When milk is opened, it will typically stay fresh for four to seven days after the printed date. Unopened whole milk usually lasts 5-7 days past that date, while reduced-fat and skim varieties often remain good for more than seven days, reports the Express.

Non-fat and lactose-free milk generally has the longest shelf life, remaining for 7-10 days beyond the printed date when properly refrigerated. Once opened, milk can last for a week or two without curdling, but a simple hack can extend its life even further. Experts from Wheeldon Brother said: "Adding a pinch of salt to the carton and shaking it to distribute the salt evenly can help.

"Salt minerals slow the souring of milk by drawing out water molecules, which lowers water activity and, in turn, inhibits bacterial growth." Apart from this, there are many other strategies that one can use to extend the shelf life of the milk. Experts suggest picking up the milk with the longest shelf life.

It’s nice to check the dates on the cartons and select the one with the furthest expiration date. While many people store milk in the fridge door, it’s better to place it on a shelf where temperatures are cooler and more consistent. The experts added: "Dairy products should ideally be stored at the back of the fridge, as the front and door are exposed to warmer air each time the door is opened.

"It’s best not to let it sit on the counter for too long." Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. You'll receive daily updates on breaking news as well as the top headlines across Scotland.

Salah Sun, Head of Product Management at Beko UK , a leading manufacturer of fridge freezers and other home appliances, said: "The way we organise our fridges can make or break our efforts to reduce food waste. "Most people don't realise that poor fridge organisation isn't just about aesthetics – it directly impacts food longevity and your household budget." He advises that we need to create designated zones in the fridge, which will make your food last for longer .

Salah Sun explains: "Temperature fluctuates within your fridge, so storing items in the right zones is crucial. "The bottom shelf, being the coldest, is perfect for raw meats, while the middle shelves maintain ideal conditions for dairy and prepared foods. The door, often used for milk, is actually the warmest area due to frequent opening.

"We recommend keeping more stable items like condiments and drinks in the door compartments, moving milk to the middle shelf where temperatures remain more constant."
