But it doesn't have to be this way, according to a TikToker . A simple swap can help your grass look vibrant, even in the winter months, and it involves the kind of fertiliser you use.

Gardening expert Follow my lawn posted a video of his garden and said: "This is how I’m going to keep my lawn green this winter. As we approach winter, my lawn will become dormant, meaning granular fertiliser will no longer work efficiently. "To combat this, I’ll be using Lawn Rules liquid fertiliser as a foliar application to provide my lawn and soil with all the nutrients it requires, plus give my lawn a great colour boost going through winter.

The point at which the lawn goes into dormancy depends on where you are and the climate you live in. The website states: "There is a cross over point where your lawns ability to take in nutrients changes and that is due to little things called microorganisms.

Studies have found that the temperature of the soil plays a major effect on microbial activity, what this means for your lawn is that there is less usable nutrients available in the soil for the roots to absorb." Don't miss..

Read our Privacy Policy While there is no one time when granular fertiliser stops being as effective, experts suggest it loses its potency when soil temperatures drop below 14C. "This is because the microorganisms struggle to break down the granular fertilser into usable nutrients before it is inevitably washed away with the rain that winter brings," Green Lawn Supplies continues.

They also suggest using a liquid fertiliser, and recommend GLS Green Envy. Liquid fertilisers are more effective in winter because they don't rely on microbial activity. The experts also suggest a "foliar application", meaning spraying the fertiliser onto the leaf of the plant.
