
ISTANBUL Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Monday said that his country seeks closer cooperation with Slovenia, as he met with his Slovenian counterpart in the capital Astana. “We intend to establish closer cooperation with your country, and as President I will do everything possible to strengthen ties in all areas of mutual interest,” Tokayev said during narrow-format talks with Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar, according to a statement from the Kazakh presidential press service Akorda. Describing Slovenia as one of Kazakhstan's main and very important partners in the Balkans, Tokayev said the meeting provided his country the opportunity to offer Ljubljana “several attractive projects.
” Tokayev further said Slovenia's direct investments in the Kazakh economy have reached almost $200 million, and that 19 companies with Slovenian capital are successfully operating in the country in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and telecommunications. For her part, the Slovenian president said that the business delegation accompanying her has already begun to discuss promising areas of partnership with their Kazakh colleagues. “Economic exchange is growing, but I still think we can achieve more.
Contacts between presidents and politicians are always a step forward, because politicians must open doors for business,” she went on to say. The statement added that an exchange of views took place between the two presidents on a wide range of issues on the global and regional agenda. Both presidents also held talks in an expanded format, and later took part in a ceremony during which the two countries signed three memorandums of understanding.
