Kauai boys, Kapaa girls win opening cross-country races

LIHUE — The Kauai High School boys team and Kapaa High School girls team captured top honors at the opening race of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation cross-country series at the Island School 3-mile course on Saturday.

The Red Raider boys placed five of its scoring runners in the Top 10 finishers to finish with 34 points in the win.

Island School, whose Khyler Greenleaf was the first overall finisher at 19 minutes, 6.92 seconds, finished second in team scoring at 41 points. The Kapaa boys, despite placing its first scoring runners in 12th place, overall, finished with 73 points.



Waimea boys, despite having its first two scoring runners finishing in fifth and seventh places, respectively, finished in fourth place with 80 points. Kauai Christian Academy fielded two runners — Emerson Brooks, finishing in position 43 out of 69 runners at 25:28.14 and Nathan Arbo finishing in position 47 overall at 25:50.

80 — didn’t have the required number of runners to qualify for team scoring. On the girls course, Kauai High School runner Aileah Villatora set the pace for the 48-runner field by finishing first and stopping the clock at 22:14.09.

Her individual performance was overshadowed by Kapaa High School, which placed its five scoring runners in the top 10 finishers for a winning total of 27 points. Island School girls, whose top runner finished second overall at 23:03.60, picked up second place with 40 points.

Kauai High School, following the individual performance by Villatora, ended with 60 points for third place after its four scoring runners crossed beyond the top 10. Waimea High School girls ended in fourth place with 120 points. Kauai Christian Academy fielded four runners, led by Alexi Audiss and Mikhaila DeRoos who ended up in 14th and 15th places, respectively.

The KCA girls did not have the sufficient number of runners to qualify for team scoring. The next KIF cross-country meet takes place on Saturday at Waimea High School. The first race starts at 7:30 a.
