Katie Thurston is sharing insight into her family planning as she begins cancer treatment. The Bachelorette alum, who recently shared her breast cancer has reached stage four after spreading to her liver, detailed the realities of undergoing the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) process amid her cancer journey, including the number of embryos she’s successfully yielded. “I thought I'd share the outcome of embryo freezing,” Katie—who wed comedian Jeff Arcuri March 22—wrote in an Instagram Stories post March 31.
“We retrieved 17 eggs and attempted to fertilize them. Of the 17, only 6 were successfully fertilized.” The 34-year-old went on to explain that the remaining six eggs were to become blastocysts—which are clusters of dividing cells made by a fertilized egg, according to the Cleveland Clinic —but only three of her eggs evolved successfully.
“And after genetic testing,” she continued, “we have 2 embryos we were able to freeze, one Grade B and one Grade C. This is the reality of IVF.” Since sharing her diagnosis in February, Katie has been candid about how her cancer journey has affected all aspects of her life, including derailing the plans she and Jeff—who got engaged last September—thought would be in store for them this year.
“We thought we'd be planning a wedding,” she told Good Morning America earlier this month. “We thought we'd be trying for a baby. And instead, we know that this year is really dedicated to just treatment and getting better.
" But while she began the IVF process after revealing her diagnosis, Katie is putting her health first—and has kept followers up to date on all the ups and downs of her journey. This includes sharing that her cancer had spread after a PET scan detected “suspicious” spots on her liver. “Because of this, I did have to then do a liver biopsy to see if my cancer has spread,” she said in a video on Instagram March 28.
“After days of waiting, unfortunately, I did find out today that my breast cancer has spread to the liver. It is fairly small, however, that does put me at stage 4.” Nonetheless, Katie explained that she still has reason to stay positive.
