The bypolls held for three assembly seats in Karnataka on November 13 have gone decisively in favour of the ruling Congress , drowning the BJP-JDS alliance and shattering the exit poll predictions forecasting one seat each for the three parties. The highlight of the results, however, is sons of two former chief ministers HD Kumaraswamy and Basavaraj Bommai ending up with a defeat.
While this is a third defeat in a row for Nikhil Kumaraswamy, who lost Mandya LS seat (2019) and Ramanagar assembly seat (2023), Bharath Bommai has failed in his first attempt to succeed his father in Shiggaon. Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan has won from Shiggaon , disproving analysts a Muslim cannot win the seat in Haveri district. In Sandur (ST), Annapoorna has succeeded her husband E Thukaram.
Channapatna, Shiggaon and Sandur (ST) went to bypolls as their MLAs Kumaraswamy (JDS), Basavaraj Bommai (BJP) and Tukaram (Congress) won the Lok Sabha polls, early this year. While Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the results have increased the government’s responsibility towards people, Dy CM Shivakumar said they are a preface to the assembly polls due in four years and an endorsement by voters of the five guarantee programmes. The union minister, who is also the state JDS president, will have to do a lot of explaining on his decision to field his son and badly losing in the Vokkaliga belt of Channapatna. This was also the widely watched and discussed constituency as the real contest here was between sworn political rivals Shivakumar and Kumaraswamy.
The Dy CM had declared he was the de facto candidate here, raising the temperature in the JDS camp. It is to be seen if the JDS will try its luck with Kumarawamy Jr for a fourth time in 2028 to ride on a possible sympathy wave. His political future has come under a cloud with the serial electoral setbacks.
With the emphatic win, Sivakumar, who is also the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), has successfully avenged the defeat of his three-time MP brother DK Suresh in Bengaluru Rural in the LS polls early this year. The Congress win has also come as a welcome balm to Siddaramaiah who has been battling charges of helping his family get 14 housing plots in Mysuru. As for BY Vijayendra, the NDA’s defeat, may only embolden his bitter rivals within the party, Basanagouda Patil (Yatna) & Co, to amplify their campaign against his leadership.
