The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Wednesday observed seven “ashing” events, or ash emissions from the crater of the Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental. The ash emissions lasted from three minutes to two hours and 26 minutes long, which generated plumes that rose 1,200 meters above the crater. It is categorized as voluminous amid continuous degassing with occasional ash emission drifting southwest.
The volcano’s sulfur dioxide flux totaled 3,585 tonnes on December 24. Alert Level 3 remains raised over Kanlaon Volcano, which means there is an intensified level of volcanic unrest. Possible hazards from the volcano include sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current (PDC), rockfall, and lahars during heavy rains.
The danger zone was expanded to a radius of six kilometers from the summit crater or active vent. Evacuation from the 6-kilometer radius of the volcano's summit is recommended. —LDF, GMA Integrated News.
