Kanlaon Volcano on Negros island had one volcanic earthquake and emitted 3,078 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said. In its bulletin issued Saturday covering the past 24-hour period, PHIVOLCS also said Kanlaon Volcano emitted weak plumes that rose up to 50 meters tall before drifting west. The volcano's edifice remains inflated, it added.
Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) remains in effect on Saturday at Kanlaon Volcano which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, PHIVOLCS said. The public was reminded that the six-kilometer radius from the volcano's summit should remain evacuated. Flying aircraft close to the volcano is not allowed, PHIVOLCS said.
Kanlaon Volcano poses the following hazards, PHIVOLCS said: Kanlaon Volcano had an "explosive" eruption last April 8, releasing voluminous plumes and PDCs. It also caused ashfall , prompting residents to evacuate. The damage to agriculture has reached nearly P1 million following the volcano's unrest, according to the Office of Provincial Agriculturist.
