The Kanlaon Volcano in the Visayas had two ash emissions and 15 volcanic earthquakes on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said. The ash emission events lasted from 29 to 36 minutes, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin issued Saturday. The volcano also emitted 3,028 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday.
Moderate plumes rising up to 200 meters tall were observed, indicating continuous degassing. The plumes drifted westward. PHIVOLCS said the volcano's edifice remains inflated.
Alert Level 3 (Increased Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) remains in effect at Kanlaon Volcano on Saturday. PHIVOLCS reiterated that the six-kilometer radius from the volcano's summit should be off limits. Flying aircraft close to the volcano should also not be allowed, it added.
At Alert Level 3, Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, poses hazards such as: Kanlaon Volcano erupted on December 9, prompting PHIVOLCS to raise the alert level from 2 to 3.
