Kangaroo counters wanted

Binoculars at the ready – the ninth annual Sunbury kangaroo count is set for next month and volunteers are needed to help gather data about local kangaroo population and movement.With the first count in 2016, Sunbury resident and organiser Robert Irvine said the number of kangaroos counted has been increasing each year.Mr Irvine said there is no question that this is “because we have created, in urbanisation, unlimited water and food for kangaroos”.

and of course, around the water courses you get green grass – as well as 40,000 people who have got green grass at their house,” Mr Irvine said.The purpose of the count is to simply observe the kangaroos and record numbers.Mr Irvine is calling on Sunbury residents to take part – which could mean observing the animals with binoculars from your car or taking a short walk near specified kangaroo grazing locations.

“Kangaroos will always be with us, and the feedback that I’ve been getting is very positive – I’ve seen comments like ‘my husband likes the kangaroos grazing on our front lawn because it means he doesn’t have to mow it,’” he said.“There’s no question the tiny joeys are so cute – let’s face it ..
