The Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to contest the legitimacy of the October 19 local government elections, pledging to bring the matter before the court. The party condemned what it called a “secretive” swearing-in ceremony for 23 local government chairpersons, overseen by Governor Uba Sani. In its statement, the PDP described the event as a setback for Nigeria’s democratic process.

The controversy follows the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KADSIECOM) declaration that candidates from the All Progressives Congress (APC) won all 23 chairmanships and 255 councilorship seats statewide. This result was confirmed by KADSIECOM’s Chairperson, Hajara Mohammed. Maria Dogo, the PDP’s Publicity Secretary, voiced the party’s position in a press release shared with news agencies in Kaduna.

She claimed that the new officials were “never truly elected by the people but installed by a dictatorial process,” referring to the governor’s office. According to Dogo, “No legitimate local government election took place in Kaduna on October 19. Any subsequent acts, such as issuing certificates, swearing-in ceremonies, or these officials assuming office, are invalid and will ultimately be overturned by the law.

” The PDP assured Kaduna residents of its commitment to challenging what it considers a flawed election law that allegedly fast-tracked an undemocratic process. The party emphasized that it is actively seeking a judicial review to contest the election results and restore what it considers rightful democratic practices in the state..
