Yahoo Sports senior writer Jay Busbee checks in from Augusta after the first round - which included the Englishman’s hot start, Rory McIlroy & Bryson DeChambeau trying to stay in contention and one amateur taking a bathroom break in Rae’s Creek. Video Transcript Thursday at Augusta National, everything was coming up. Justin Rose.
All right, I'm really sorry for that punt. I deserve a two stroke penalty at the very least. But Justin Rose did have a heck of a day on Thursday at Augusta National, carding a 65 to give him a 3 stroke lead over the field.
Now, Rose is trying to add a second major to the one he already has, 2013 at the US Open. Here at Augusta National, he's finished twice, 2 times. Uh, most notably in 2017 when he lost to Sergio Garcia in a playoff.
He's had success all over the map. He just hasn't quite been able to put it across the finish line. Now he set up for that this week, but he's gonna have some really tough competition from Scotty Scheffler, who's lurking just 3 strokes back at -4.
Scheffler put together what was for him a routine 4 under par round, didn't do anything exceptional, didn't do anything terrible, just went out and put together one of the best rounds of the day. A little further down the leaderboard, you've got names like Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy. This is setting up to be a great weekend, a great Masters.
And then there's some really interesting stories here. You've got 65-year-old Freddy Couples finishing at -1, and then you've got 21-year-old Nick Dunlap finishing at + 18. That would be a 90, rough, rough start for the young pro.
The day's weirdest story though belongs to Jose Luis Ballester who decided to How should we put this? Answer the call of nature at Amen Corner. He walked up into the woods around the azaleas, took care of business, turned around and saw that the entire Grandstand was applauding him for his, for his good work, and as he said, it was the loudest cheer that he got all day. Now Augusta National might not be so thrilled with his uh uh watering of the plants out there, but he said that he would do it again and hopefully he won't have to.
That's a wrap from Thursday at Augusta. Much more to come here from the Masters..
